Good ideas for JSwipe bio. Idk what to put to either be funny or interesting I don’t want to be generic. I was thinking of saying third year college student majoring in sociology open to new experiences and meeting new Jews something along those lines. Any feedback greatly appreciated.

JDate Bought JSwipe and Everyone Loves Each Other Now. And GameStop Corp. Also fell. The rallies for companies being touted on social media platforms like Twitter and Reddit had come. Tinder's Sign-Up Process vs. Bumble's Sign-Up Process. Unlike the lengthy sign-up processes of online dating sites in the early 2000s, well-run apps in today’s day and age.

Right on time for Tu b’Av, the Jewish equivalent of Valentine’s Day, infamous Jewish dating site JDate (or rather its parent company Spark Networks) has pressed charges against JSwipe, best described as “Tinder for Jews.”

Perhaps it’s out of sheer jealousy (JSwipe is a free, modern, sleek-looking app, whereas JDate charges a heavy monthly fee to send messages on its website perpetually stuck in 2004) that caused JDate to file a lawsuit. But the claim that JDate owns the intellectual property right to the letter “J” is a bit silly.

There are many brands, both Jewish and non-Jewish, that start with a J. To list a few: JWed, JCrush, JVibe, J Crew, J. Cole, J-Lo, and Jay-Z. As Forbes puts it, “‘J-name’ in company branding seems as common as “berg” in Jewish last names.” Does Spark plan on suing all these too?

Dear JSwipe, we are totally on your side and hope that the case is thrown out. However, should push come to shove and you need to come up with a new name, you might as well change your branding completely. Here are a few ideas to try out.

OkMoses

Reddit

This is similar to JSwipe’s existing app, but it uses a special algorithm to determine compatibility based on a series of questions each user answers. Such questions include “Falafel or shawarma?” and “When do you put on a jacket?” (choices: When I get cold, or When my mother gets cold). Answer enough of these and you are bound to find the perfect match that even your bubbe approves of.

Note: We also considered “OkJewpid” as an alternative name, but we thought that bordered on the ridiculous.

Fringe

You know how every time you meet a Jewish person, there’s a high chance that you have a mutual friend? Or five? Or 100? This idea takes advantage of that phenomenon. Fringe only connects you to people whom you have a mutual friend with. Whether your mutual friend comes from summer camp, college, BBYO, or that Israel trip, it is bound to spark an interesting conversation.

And of course the ultimate goal is to tie the knot, or rather the tzitzit (which in English translates to “fringes”, get it?).

Another approach would be to tackle a niche audience. Yes, more niche than Jews seeking other Jews. This idea is to focus solely on gay and bisexual Jews seeking other gay and bisexual Jews. Using the geolocation function on one’s phone, users can locate other men in close proximity who are interested in “playing dreidel” together.

For those who think there would not be enough users to make this app sustainable… how could you know until you try it out?

Lox Meets Bagel

To be honest, we know nothing about the app that we’re trying to parody here, but it made for some really good wordplay.

Shlepper

Perhaps the best solution is to get out the dating market entirely. Dating apps are so passé, now it’s all about ride-sharing. Marketed as the “Uber for Jews”, Shlepper is the perfect opportunity for the driver and rider to argue about questions of the Talmud, differing customs in kashrut, or just why the synagogue dues went up this year. All this on the way over to Pico-Robertson or the Lower East Side.

The other unique feature is that, in typical Israeli fashion, you get to haggle over the price of the trip. But tip your driver well or you might end up lost in traffic for 40 years!

Kosher Kandy Krush Saga

And if ride sharing apps are out, then maybe the developers would consider creating a game where you have to match 3 or more kosher candies in a row and prevent treif chocolates from filling up the board. Users only receive 5 lives, which replenish over a period of time, but they can earn more by reciting the correct bracha for candy.

However, King (the company behind Candy Crush Saga) is known for going after other companies who try to use the word “Saga” in their app name. So if the JSwipe developers went with this idea, they’d have the same problem all over again!

At first everything seemed normal between JDate and JSwipe: the former is a veteran of the online dating sphere catering to Jewish singles, while the latter is a newcomer who created the ‘Tinder of Jews’. However, in 2015 Spark Networks, the group behind JDate, filed a lawsuit against JSwipe, claiming that the then-newcomer violated trademark laws by incorporating the letter ‘J’ in its name, which is the intellectual property of Spark Networks’s “J-family” brand. JDate also claimed that they have patented a software algorithm that determines mutual interests and notifies singles of matches, a core concept for all dating services.

Believe it or not, the nasty dispute had a happy ending: a few months after the lawsuit, the two companies made up and teamed up. Still, even though both brands are now under the same roof, their features are widely different.

JDate

JDate was created in 1997 as part of Spark Networks, one of the most influential dating site groups in the industry. Since then JDate went through several redesigns, but it managed to retain its popularity among Jewish singles. Even though it has a very distinct clientele, the site is open to non-believers as well – but only if they specify whether they are willing to convert to Judaism later or not.

JDate Mobile App

The service prides itself on its user-friendly interface: in the profile section, for instance, hobbies and preferences are displayed with pictures instead of plain text. The matchmaking engine recommends several promising dates every day, but manual searches can be launched as well by simply changing the options. However, there is a third option called “Secret Admirer” that is all about mingling randomly selected profiles. JDate is available for smartphones thanks to a downloadable app that effectively scales down the interface for touchscreen, while also preserving all important features.

Signing up with JDate is entirely cost-free, but in order to send messages a monthly, quarterly or semi-annual subscription to gold membership is a must. As for the pricing: the month-by-month subscription costs $39.99 per month, the quarterly plan charges $29.99 per month, while the six-month plan is only $19.99 per month.

JSwipe

JSwipe was announced in 2014 during the height of the Tinder-craze, so it’s not surprising that the dating app has a Tinderesque flavor. As a result of that JSwipe completely ditched the concept of traditional browser-based matchmaking: not only is the dating service exclusively available for Android and iOS, but it also focuses on swiping profiles left or right.

Photo Section

Unlike Tinder, however, JSwipe is for an audience interested in serious relationships. Therefore, profile pictures are far less revealing and erotic, and you’ll find that the dating profiles contain a lot more information than with the counterpart it’s inspired on. Another noteworthy feature is the limited time to chat: after 18 days, the connection and all messages with the contacted person will be permanently deleted.

JSwipe’s allegiance to the Jewish community is most prevalent from the matchmaking layout: your partner’s sect and kosher preference enjoys top priority on the profile page, as they are right below information regarding the person’s age and geographical distance from you. The user interface also shows subtle signs of the Jewish culture: for example, when you have a match, you see graphics reminiscent of a bar mitzvah celebration.

JSwipe is free to use, and this includes the ability to send messages. Members also receive one Super Swipe per day, a premium feature that allows you to make a strong first impression on your date. But for just $9.99 per month you get five daily Super Swipes.

Conclusion

JDate and JSwipe are not only similar in name, but they also belong to the same company. Still, these two Jewish dating services aim for distinct audiences.

JDate is more traditional and it can be accessed from desktop computers, too. The matchmaking has more layers and your messages remain accessible forever. The only thing that may be bothersome to some is the fact that communication is locked behind a paywall, but it can be easily bypassed by paying a modest monthly contribution. JSwipe, on the other hand, is ideal for millennials. Matchmaking is fast-paced and easy, and the geo-location technology helps finding other members who are close to you. The service is also free, with the option to purchase more daily boosts.
